Séminaire "Transnationalism and Imperialism in the Western - A Preconference Discussion"

Le Mardi, 13. novembre 2018 - 0:00
Salle 126 site Saint-Charles

Le prochain séminaire d'EMMA aura lieu le mardi 13 novembre à 18h en salle 126.

Hervé Mayer (EMMA) and David Roche (CAS, Toulouse Jean Jaurès) will discuss a contemporary trend in film genre studies that approaches the Western film through the lens of transnationalism. The seminar will introduce and illustrate the themes explored in the upcoming conference “Transnationalism and Imperialism: New Perspectives on the Western” (UPVM, Nov. 15 and 16, 2018).

The Western has been widely read within the confines of a national culture and cinema in the U.S as the cinematic expression of an American identity. In recent film studies, the genre is still widely explored, understood, and constructed as American despite overwhelming evidence of foreign production and global circulation since the invention of cinema. In doing so, studies of the Western strengthen the construction of an American exception that the genre—and the myth of the West it is grounded in—itself promoted. In order to emancipate studies of the Western from discourses of American exceptionalism, the organizers of the conference “Transnationalism and Imperialism: New Perspectives on the Western” propose to connect film genre studies with the recent field of transnational cinema to explore the Western from more de-centered perspectives.

Le séminaire est ouvert à tous.
